Artist's Description

The first settlement in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia took place in 1839 when Prussian Lutheran families arrived. The name 'Hahndorf' was derived from Captain Dirk Hahn of the ship named 'Zebra', which arrived in Adelaide in 1838 with a party of immigrants from the Eastern Provinces of Prussia. Captain Hahn stayed on to see the new arrivals were settled, after having survived an horrendous journey by sea. He eventually selected an area near Mt Barker which his passengers named after him in recognition of his efforts. The town's Germain influence is still visible today in the architecture of the old buildings, many of which still stand as homes and shops.
As in many quaint places, cafes and gift shops have appeared everywhere and Hahndorf has now become a major tourist attraction in the area. The town's general tone has altered but at least some of the old buildings have been kept alive

About Wayne Sherriff

Wayne Sherriff

As an avid photographer for many years, my tendency is to choose subjects with potential rather than things that look good to begin with and therein lies my challenge. I often look for an odd angle or composition and like most photographers, have become a keen observer. Seeking the unusual and putting a different slant on the very usual are important concepts to me. My philosophy is - photograph for oneself, be observant and strive for originality but most of all have fun. My personal perception doesn't always meet popular validation, so If someone likes what I produce, that's a bonus. All images are copyrighted 2008-2024 CHROMATICVISTA PHOTOGRAPHY.
